Natural Recipes For Kids
Children have finer skin than adults so the bath products we use for them need to be gentler than those for adults. The following recipes will help keep your kids without any harsh ingredients. Even better you can make this a fun project for you and your children, and what a great way to introduce them to herbal therapy.....!!
Honey Bear Bath~This sweet foaming liquid is perfect for soothing dry, sensitive skin. Honey has significant antioxidant properties, helping to protect and maintain healthy skin and hair. Using a honey bear bottle adds to the fun!
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 cup vegetable based liquid soap such as castile soap
Mix together the ingredients and pour into a clean bottle with a tight fitting lid (honey bear bottle is best for fun)
To Use~Gently shake the bottle to remix and pour 1/4 cup into the bath under running water.
Peter Rabbit Bath~ Peter Rabbit had his troubles staying out of MacGregor's garden. Peter's momma, at the end of the tale, gives Peter a cup of chamomile and sends him to bed. Mix up this bath recipe when your own little bunnies need rest and relaxation.
- 1/2 dried chamomile flowers or loose chamomile tea
- 2 cups oatmeal
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
Put all ingredients in blender or food processor and mix until you have a smooth, fine powder. Pour into a clean, dry container.
To Use~Pour 1/2 cup into the tub under running water.
Light, Moisturizing Baby Oil~This light oil keeps your babies' skin healthy and full of moisture. The act itself of rubbing this oil on is an incredible bonding experience that both you and your baby will love!
- 1/4 cup apricot kernel oil
- 1 tbsp light sesame oil
- 1-2 drops chamomile, sweet orange or lavender essential oil
- 1/2 tbsp wheat germ oil
Stir together all ingredients and pour into a clean dry container with a tight fitting lid.
To Use~Massage a small amount of oil into babies skin (especially great after a warm bath)
Lavender Scented Baby Powder~This simple powder, made with antibacterial lavender will keep your baby dry and happy. You can also use this on older children (and yourself!) after bathing. For even more fun let older children use a big fluffy powder puff. You can substitute another soothing fragrance such as sweet orange or vanilla if you would rather.
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 tsp almond oil or sunflower oil
- 2 drops lavender oil
Place ingredients in a small jar or sealable plastic bag. Seal and gently shake the container (or bag) until well mixed.
To Use~Sprinkle on skin as with any powder.
Sun Perfume~Aromatic oils from the fresh herbs and flowers are released by the warm rays of the sun. Pick out (Letting your children help is a great idea) any combination of fresh herbs and flowers and experiment with the scents these plants produce. Encourage your kids to add any dry spices they may like such as cinnamon sticks, anise stars, or cardamom pods.
- 2 cups water
- 1 crushed vitamin c tablet
- 1-2 large handfuls of fresh herbs and flowers, washed
- Any dry spices (optional)
Pour water into clean jar. Dissolve the vitamin C in the water and stir well. (the vitamin C acts as a preservative and will keep bacteria from growing in your mixture). Add your flowers, herbs and spices and place a lid on your jar. Set the mixture in a sunny spot indoors or outside in the garden, shaking your jar daily. After three days, strain and discard the flowers and herbs, saving the scented water. For a stronger fragrance add more fresh ingredients and let the water sit for another three days. When your are satisfied with the scent, pour into a pretty bottle and enjoy!
Coconut Oil Lip Balm~This lip balm is sure to please with it's mild vanilla scent. Coconut oil conditions lips and provides a protective layer that locks in moisture.
- 1 tsp grated beeswax
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 1/8 tsp vit. E oil
- 2-3 drops pure vanilla extract or flavored oil (optional)
Place beeswax, coconut oil and vit.E oil in an oven-proof container. Heat gently until the wax and oils are melted. Stir in vanilla and mix well. Pour the mixture into a clean container and allow it to cool completely.
To Use~Spread on lips with a clean finger.
